      Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa. His father was a tribal chief. Mandela obtained a BA from the University of Fort Hare and qualified in law at the University of Witwatersrand.

      In 1944, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC). After the National Party established the apartheid system in 1948, Mandela actively resisted this racial segregation policy. He was elected secretary of the ANC Youth League in 1948 and became its president in 1950. In 1961, he formed the military wing of the ANC, Umkhonto we Sizwe, and served as its commander. In 1962, Mandela was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1964, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for "attempting to overthrow the government by violence".
